Liberia: CDC Opposes Frances Johnson-Morris
The CDC also claimed that Cllr. Morris will use her new portfolio to go after perceived opponents.
The party said while it welcomes the establishment of the Anti-Corruption Commission, however, the appointment of a 'presidential puppet' will undermine the objectives of the commission, thereby rendering the government's drive against corruption as a pretext to hoodwink the Liberian public.
The party pointed out that the fight against corruption in the Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's administration can not be executed by a protégée of the President, neither the one who is schmaltzy and thought to have 'influenced' the 2005 Presidential Elections in Liberia.
CDC indicated that although the power to appoint remains in the hands of the President, it is equally important to appoint as head of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Liberians who have no political attachments and those who bear the trust of the Liberian public.
In a statement issued yesterday and signed by the CDC Assistant Secretary General Acarious Gray, the party stressed that the appointment of Cllr. Morris should be given a second thought, instead of making the commission a "partisan bureau of Czars and stooges" that are likely to chase government's perceived enemies.
"The wide-range of powers lay at the door of the commission must not be handled in a slapdash fashion by an emotional and a 'hit and miss talker' like Cllr. Morris whose unwarranted attacks on well-meaning oppositions have created an absolute distrust in her ability to head a commission that will help put an end to the culture of impunity," CDC emphasized.
The party reiterated its opposition on grounds that Cllr. Morris made an 'unguided statement' sometime ago when she accused opposition politicians of attempting to unseat the government of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.
CDC recalled that her accusation backed by falsehoods and scare tactics was intended to scare away meaningful oppositions and put them at a serious security risk.
The party said since this thoughtless statement was uttered by Cllr. Morris, the UP government keeps promoting her as "senior operative" and confidant of the President of Liberia.http://allafrica.com/
