Namibia: Roessing Man Accused of Assaulting Child

A CHARGE of assault has been laid against the assistant director of the Roessing Foundation, Bonadei Thekwane, after he allegedly beat a 10-year-old schoolboy from Westside Primary at Swakopmund with a belt in front of several children.

According to the boy's sister, Nicolene Jacobs, the assault took place on Wednesday at the end of the school day, when the boy was on his way home.

Thekwane and his son, also a pupil at the school, were allegedly waiting in their car outside the school grounds.

When the boy left the schoolyard, Thekwane allegedly got out of his car and dragged the boy to the school gate, where he allegedly beat him several times on the head and body with a belt, according to Jacobs.

The boy, who spoke to The Namibian too, made the same claims, and other sources at the school confirmed the incident.

The boy had several bruises, mainly on his head.

He was taken to the Swakopmund State Hospital and given painkillers, and was also booked off from school yesterday.

Jacobs speculated that the incident might have something to do with a scrap between her brother and Thekwane's son at the end of the last term.

During the fight, a stone hit Thekwane's son on the forehead, leaving a bump.

The Police said that Woman and Child Protection Unit was investigating the charge.

The Namibian unsuccessfully tried to contact Thekwane for comment at the offices of the Roessing Foundation at Swakopmund and Arandis, as well as on his cellphone.

A message was left on his cellphone but he had not called back by the time of going to press.
