Nigeria: JTF Arrests 10 Cultists in Port Harcourt

ABOUT ten suspected militants and cultists were arrested yesterday when men of the Joint Task Force in Rivers state combed Abonnema Wharf/Njemanze parts of the state capital in its bid to rid the area of miscreants and brigands.

According to residents in the areas, as early as 5am, they started hearing sporadic gun shots. Not knowing what was happening many fled their houses."We thought it was an exchange of fire between warring cult groups.

We had to hurriedly lock our door and disappear from the area for fear of being hit by stray bullets. There was panic in the neighborhood," Nebedum said.

When contacted for comment on the raid, spokesman of the JTF and army PRO in the state, Lieutenant Col Sagi Musa said nobody was killed. He said those arrested would be handed over to the appropriate quarter for prosecution.

Ït is true that we raided the areas. And about ten persons were arrested. Nobody died in the operation. We are handing over those arrested to the appropriate security bodies for prosecution"

It would be recalled that some hoodlums in the area recently came on Njemanze road spraying bullets at innocent passers bye. The incident led to the loss of about three lives. And also generated tension in the state capital.
