In November 1997, elementary school principal, Edgar Friedrichs took 12-year-old Jeremy Bell for an overnight stay at a remote Thurmond cabin. Friedrichs forced Jeremy to ingest amitriptyline and chloroform so he could sexually assault his defenseless body. Jeremy died of toxic poisoning from the chemicals. His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Friedrichs and the school board for allegedly neglecting to protect Jeremy from the threat of child molestation. The suit was filed in Fayette County Circuit Court and a judge approved a $2.25 million settlement to be paid by insurers for the Fayette County Board of Education. In 2004, the family previously entered into a settlement for a $300,000 payout from Friedrichs' homeowner's insurance. Friedrichs has been convicted sexually molesting at least two other boys from the school and will spend the rest of his life in prison. (Dec-18-06) []
