In 2002, four dozen immigrant Thai welders were brought to California to work for the Napa firm on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Instead, the workers found themselves trapped in near slavery and working in restaurants for pay well below minimum wage. The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed charges against Trans Bay Steel for allegedly trafficking humans. Trans Bay Steel legally recruited migrant laborers, but then exploited and abused them after they arrived in the states. Trans Bay Steel agreed to a $1.4 million settlement to help the victims, but claim they were duped by Kota Manpower of Thailand. (Dec-09-06)[]
